Kinect Xbox 360 Games for Kids & Families #xbox

Recently I attend a Kinect for Xbox 360 Showcase to learn about, and of course play, the latest games in fitness, family and playful learning. As most of my readers know, I like to play video games and it seems my son is also turning into a little gamer.

Kinect Xbox 360 Games

Since the event was family friendly, I decided to take my son to help me test out the game. From the moment we entered Skylight West, my son was in game playing mode. We made sure to visit all the gaming stations and our top 2 gaming picks are!

Double Fine Happy Action Theater (800 Microsoft Points or $10) on Kinect for Xbox 360 is a series of 18 vibrant activities that engages players of all ages. With “Happy Action Theater,” there are no menus, no instructions and no rules. There is no wrong way to play and there are no winners or losers. Just walk in front of the Kinect sensor and play. The environments intuitively respond to your body movements.

I LOVED the movement element of this game and think it's prefect for families with younger children. Not only does the game encourages movement and coordination, it also supports cooperative play for up to six players. As you can see in the video my 3 year son was able to play with 8 year Alex, daughter of Linda of NYC Single Mom. Family game night with everyone!

Kinect Sesame Street TV - is a revolutionary new two-way TV experience exclusive to Kinect for Xbox 360 that allows children to literally jump into Sesame Street and interact with favorite characters, by helping with tasks like counting with Grover, learning letters with Cookie Monster and exploring Elmo’s World.

I LOVE the educational element of Sesame Street TV. While my son was just excited to interact with the Sesame Street characters, I was impressed how it worked along the same curriculum with the Sesame Street show to teach my son about movement, letters, etc.

I also liked that Sesame Street TV offered different options. Kids can play the games using gestures or their voices or just watch a Sesame Street episode.

While these two games are our favorites of the night, the other games are just as awesome. Some of the other family friendly game we played and liked are:

Kinect Star Wars ($49.99) allows fans to physically hone their Jedi skills, wield the power of the Force in their hands, pilot iconic ships and vehicles, rampage as a vicious rancor monster, or even dance with iconic Star Wars characters. All controller-free power of Kinect for Xbox 360.

I was hoping to get more time playing this game but my son was distracted by the live C-3PO and R2-D2 walking around. I figured I could always play the game later. It seemed more important to introduce my son to iconic figures and start his jedi training. LOL

Kinect Rush: A Disney•Pixar Adventure ($49.99) Families and fans can experience the worlds of five Disney•Pixar films. Players can team up with characters from “The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille,” “Up,” “Cars” and “Toy Story” to solve puzzles and uncover hidden secrets. Other features of the game

  • Cooperative play. You’ll never feel alone while playing “Kinect Rush: A Disney?Pixar Adventure” — play with a friend or look to your Pixar friends to help you in each adventure.
  • Explore and discover. Work with a friend to overcome puzzling obstacles or team up with a Pixar character to find hidden secrets.

Kinectimals Now With Bears ($49.99 Game / $14.99 Xbox LIVE downloadable add-on content) is the sequel to the "Kinectimals” game. Adding to the original five feline cubs, “Kinectimals Now with Bears” features a new island of cuddly bear cubs ready for new adventures and interactions, along with five additional cat species. On both islands, you can unlock collectibles to personalize your gameplay experience. Other features of the game
  • Create memories that last a lifetime. From the first time she recognizes her name to when she learns to roll over, your cub will grow up as your sidekick and friend, eager to discover the environment around you. Use your voice* and body to teach your pet new tricks such as fetch; play activities, including jump rope and juggling; and even master agility courses with hops, stops and balancing acts.
  • Get Competitive. Engage in challenges with your pet to earn Achievements and improve your Gamerscore, or team up and compete with friends and family members and their pets to see who can score the highest. Plus, win cool rewards for your Xbox 360 Avatar.
  • Plush Pals. Bring your pet to life with a variety of collectible “Kinectimals” plush pals (sold separately). Plus, select Build-A-Bear Workshop furry friends will include Microsoft Tag technology, which imports these furry friends right into the game when scanned with the Kinect for Xbox 360.
As you can see there's lots of awesome Kinect for Xbox 360 game for families being released this year. With so many options for families it will be easy to plan a family game night. Happy gaming!

Please Note: No compensation was received for this post. But my son and I had a blast playing all the games at the event. Views expressed are always 100% my own.

Planning for New York Wine Expo 2012 @NewYorkWineExpo

Last year I attended the New York Wine Expo to cover the launch of Avocados from Mexico “Taste the Wow” tour. While there I just happened to meet Leslie Sbrocco, Founder of Thirsty Girl, a community of women passionate about wine, food, travel, libations and fun.

Photobucket
Photobucket

Leslie and I spoke about the joys of wine and friendship. We both agreed that more women needed more enjoyment of both! Leslie explained that planning monthly (or weekly) socials to learn more about wine is a great group activity and easy to do. Her site offers wine education seminars and community support for women interested.

Photobucket
Photobucket

I wish I could have chatted with Leslie more but she had a TV interview to finish and I had to head back home. On my way out I did stop by a few booths.

Photobucket
Photobucket

One booth sign said they had the secret to the perfect Sangria! Of course I had to test out their recipe.

Photobucket

Another booth offered chocolate to go with your wine. You KNOW I had to stop there. Yum!

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

As I walked to the exit my eyes roamed over all the different tables offering wines from all over the world. I was amazed to see some countries made wines and wondered how their wines tasted.

Since I didn't get a chance to fully "cover" the New York Wine Expo last year, this year I'm REALLY looking forward to it.

The 5th Annual New York Wine Expo, will be on March 2nd - 4th and offers attendees a chance to sample wines from nearly 175 wineries from around the globe. Held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City, several seminars will take place throughout the weekend led by industry experts. While more are sure to be added, those currently on the calendar include:

Wine 101: Taste Like a Pro with Wine Spectator
Friday, March 2, 6:00 – 7:00 pm
Saturday, March 3, 12:30 – 1:30 pm
Explore grapes and wine styles as you taste eight wines from around the world, learn the tasting techniques used by pros and build a wine appreciation framework

Wine Spectator Presents...Portugal – Discover a World of Difference
Friday, March 2, 8:30 – 9:30 pm
One of the world’s most traditional wine countries is seriously stepping up its game and using indigenous grape varieties from diverse regions to produce delicious wines. Explore Portugal and taste for yourself why wine critics are excited about Portugal’s new wave wines. Hosted by Wine Spectator's Director of Education Gloria Maroti Frazee.

The Rhône Valley: A River Runs Through It…with Mark Oldman
Saturday, March 3, 1:00 – 2:00 pm
Renowned wine speaker, author, and PBS TV personality Mark Oldman gives you an insider's view of the wine of France's celebrated Rhône Valley. Mark clues you in to a wide variety of Rhone wines that will make you the envy of your wine-passionate friends.

6 High Tech Tips for Keeping Warm This Winter

As temperatures begin to drop, you might have a lot more on your minds than the coming winter chill. Depending on where you live, a particularly glacial season could put a serious freeze on your budget. Many have seen the cost of home heating oil rise by as much as 30% or more.

Tech Tips for Keeping Warm
So instead of just cranking up the thermostat, Jeff Cambron, who's worked in technology for over 10 years, shares 6 alternative tools for keeping costs down and the heat up.
  1. Cuddle up with a USB blanket. - If you spend a lot of time at home on the computer, this USB heated blanket is perfect for keeping away the chills. It plugs into any USB port, comes with two cords and can be worn over the shoulders or across your lap. Just pour yourself a cup of tea and settle in.

  2. Keep your toes toasty with battery-powered heating socks. -These super-cozy socks have a thin battery-powered heating element encased in the toe that won't overheat, and are made out of "moisture-wicking" material to keep you toasty, not sweaty.

  3. Get efficient with a programmable thermostat. - This one's a no-brainer so if you don't have one, get one. A programmable thermostat will automatically lower the temperature of your home at night or while you're out and about, making the heat run less when you're not actively using it. Avoid the elements all together and find free shipping codes for Home Depot, who has a great selection of these handy devices.

  4. Stay mobile with touch-screen gloves. - iPhone users have long known the frustration of trying to text, swipe or tap while out in the elements. Hopefully you won't need gloves in the house too often, but when Jack Frost really comes a knockin', these babies from Agloves made with a special conductive material will keep you connected.

  5. Dodge the draft with outlet insulation. - Drafts pass in and out of the home through the outlet and outlet covers, especially the ones along exterior walls. Fortunately there are special outlet and switch gaskets specially made to reduce drafts. Ask your local hardware store or just DIY.

  6. Go old school with the hot water bottle. - OK, this is hardly high-tech, but this ingenious invention is still one of the best and easiest ways to stay warm in bed, as well as soothe aches and pains. It's cheap, reusable and will last forever. Tell that to your soon-to-be obsolete iPhone 4.

Home Depot 3rd Annual "Retool Your School" HBCU Grant Program Contest

The Home Depot recently launched the 3rd annual Retool Your School campus improvement grant program. Online voting began February 14, 2012 and will end April 10, 2012. The Retool Your School program is a unique competition for alumni, family and friends, as well as students to vote for their favorite Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) project.

Home Depot Retool Your School Contest

This year’s program includes the addition of two new awards -- the new Campus Pride Grant, as well as an additional Tier II Grant. The 2012 Retool Your School Grants, for the school project proposal that receives the most online votes, will total $185,000 to be awarded as
  • (1) $50,000 Tier I Grant,
  • (11) $10,000 Tier II Grants
  • (1) $25,000 Campus Pride Grant
The Home Depot’s goal is to award grants for projects that will have a lasting impact. Last year, Bethune Cookman University received a Tier I Grant of $50,000, which will be used to install automated access doors and a wheelchair ramp in its Student Center to accommodate students, faculty and staff members with disabilities.

Additionally, past Retool Your School proposals and projects have included recommendations for upgrades utilizing a variety of sustainable resources. Special attention is given to projects that include eco-friendly and energy-saving elements, including energy-efficient lighting and windows, water-saving faucets, etc.

The Mother Company "A Little Book about Feelings" Book Reading & Review

This weekend I joined Leticia of TechSavvyMama and the founders of The Mother Company at Books of Wonder for a live reading of their book "A Little Book about Feelings" by Ruby from "Ruby’s Studio: The Feelings Show".

The Mother Company Book Reading
The Mother Company Book ReadingThe Mother Company Book Reading

Besides the story time, there was arts and crafts activities for the kids and families and a special musical performance by Elizabeth Mitchell (who sang “The Happy Song” in “The Feelings Show”)
The Mother Company Book Reading

Before the event started I had a chance to meet with Abbie and Sam and learn more about how and why they felt a need to "foster emotional literacy in our children". Since Abbie and Sam are both also mothers, they understood the confusion and frustration parents feel when our children reach a certain age and they're all about "feeling".

While many TV shows help teach kids how to learn their ABC's etc, very few shows help kids understand their "feelings" in a safe and fun way. Abbie and Sam, which the help of experts, think it's time to redefine screen time. Through The Mother Company, they’re redefining children’s entertainment by offering
  • Programs that model good behavior.
  • Entertainment that is fun, stylish, and educational all at the same time.
  • Content and pacing that doesn’t make kids – or parents – freak out.

A Little Book About Feelings
A Little Book About FeelingsA Little Book About Feelings

One of their products helping to do this "A Little Book About Feelings", which I received to review. This picture book shows "felt creatures" in different situations that help young children learn about a variety of feelings. I read the book to my son and he enjoyed it. At this stage of his 3 year old life "feelings" are a big thing so the book helped both of us understand how to deal with them.

During the event I also learned that The Mother Company has launch their first app for kids! The storybook app is based on their children’s book, “A Little Book About Feelings.” and narrated by Ruby from “Ruby’s Studio: The Feelings Show.” The App is available for iPhone and iPad on iTunes. You can find a link and trailer for the “A Little Book About Feelings.” app here
